Grand Central Terminal's construction, from 1903 to 1913, involved replacing the old Grand Central Depot. It aimed to be the world's largest terminal, both in size and track count. The project was massive, with 3,200,000 cubic yards of earth excavated, reaching depths of up to 10 floors. Daily, 1,000 cubic yards of debris were removed by 300 cars. The average depth was 45 feet, with the lowest level 40 feet below ground. Over 10,000 workers installed 118,597 short tons of steel and 33 miles of track. A 0.5-mile-long, 6-foot-wide tube was also sunk 65 feet underground to the East River. The new terminal opened on February 2, 1913, with the first train departing at 1:01 AM. Within 16 hours, an estimated 150,000 visitors arrived.
